life skill (noun) – an ability that helps people manage everyday life with confidence.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a safe, stable future. At Sheltering Wings, each resident works toward goals that reflect their own strengths, experiences and hopes for what comes next.
Most behavioral health experts group life skills into three areas:
- Cognitive – understanding and applying information
- Personal – caring for yourself and managing daily life
- Interpersonal – communicating and building healthy relationships
Our trained staff and volunteers work alongside every man, woman and child to create personalized plans based on their age, goals and needs. Support may include education, childcare, job readiness, parenting, stress management, healthy relationships, mental health counseling, legal advocacy and much more.
Support Doesn’t End When Shelter Does
When residents are ready to move into a place of their own, we’re still here to help.
Thanks to our partnerships with RealAmerica and Cummins Behavioral Health Systems, more families have access to safe, affordable housing and continued support as they begin the next chapter.
RealAmerica built a 52-unit affordable apartment community and set aside 13 apartments for Sheltering Wings residents. Cummins and Sheltering Wings provide on-site case management, life skills support and mental health services for former residents and other community members who need them.
