Haven Homes makes affordable housing a reality on Indy’s West side.

Affordable housing is one of the greatest needs for survivors of domestic violence who are safe and secure enough to move out of Sheltering Wings. The financial strain of keeping a roof overhead – not to mention vehicle, childcare, and education expenses – can be a major stumbling block between a determined survivor and sustained independence.

So, when the opportunity arose to partner with RealAmerica and Cummins Behavioral Health Systems, Inc. to bring a 52-unit supportive housing community to Hendricks County, we jumped in!

To the clients served by Sheltering Wings, Haven Homes provides affordable housing when, under other circumstances, may not have the opportunity to secure housing. Haven Homes provides a safe community with wrap-around services and ongoing case management to our clients to ensure the best possible outcome for them to have stable and independent lives.

Not only does this fully featured community serve former Sheltering Wings residents, but it also provides secure, safe, affordable housing for dozens of area families who need it.

Haven Homes FAQ

What is supportive housing?

According to our partners at CSH, The Corporation for Supportive Housing, “Supportive housing is an innovative and proven solution to some of communities’ toughest problems. It combines affordable housing with services that help people who face the most complex challenges to live with stability, autonomy and dignity.”

Supportive housing is a proven, cost-effective and beneficial way to build healthy, strong communities. At Haven Homes, residents will have immediate access to the domestic violence services of Sheltering Wings and mental health services provided by Cummins Behavioral Health Services, Inc. These voluntary, quality-of-life-enhancing services – in addition to the proximity of Haven Homes to well-paying jobs, shopping establishments, quality schools and reliable transportation – will provide residents with every opportunity to thrive.

Is affordable housing cost-effective?

Yes. “A large body of research shows that the vast majority of people who live in supportive housing are able to stay stably housed in the community,” according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, citing research on the “effect of supportive housing on other outcomes, like mental and physical health, and the use of health care systems, corrections, and other systems.”

Among the many benefits of supportive housing for those who receive the services, the availability of supportive housing decreases the overall strain on a community’s vital resources. As residents thrive in supportive housing communities like Haven Homes, not only is there less of a strain on area resources, residents begin to make positive social and economic contributions to the surrounding community.
