Your Donation to the Sheltering Wings Capital Campaign means we can serve more survivors of domestic abuse inside and outside of emergency shelter.

You are needed. We must raise $6M to help survivors like Ashley.

“I felt supported for the first time in my life. They took me in for nothing. I could save money for the first time. They made me feel good. They even told me I looked pretty every day. That meant so much.”

Ashley

You can make sure as many people as possible get the help they need – and you will save and change lives. Please prayerfully consider how you might participate in this campaign.

Our goal is to raise $6 million. Thanks to support for our community, we’ve raised $4.2 million of that goal.

With your help, we can unlock a $440,000 United Way of Central Indiana match. To access these funds, we must first raise $440,000 in commitments by June—only then can we move forward with securing the match. Every dollar you give or pledge brings us closer to unlocking these matching funds—doubling the impact of every gift. Will you help today?

Our Goal.

Our goal is to serve MORE people outside our building walls — while continuing to do our best work in shelter for those who need emergency housing.

The capital campaign will secure funds for the future of our programs and prepare our building to better serve as a Center. The focus is on our children’s service areas, program and client services, and two new client rooms.

What that means.

  • That means renovating our building to better serve as a “Center” with more room for program activities for adults and children and much needed workspace for a growing staff.
  • That means reaching more people in the community before they ever need shelter AND better serving those who don’t need or want shelter — meeting them where they are.
  • That means raising funds to support and sustain the essential number of staff. Our programs ARE our people.

Currently, the need outpaces our ability to help.

Sheltering Wings’ 80-bed domestic violence shelter is the second largest in Indiana and the only one in Hendricks County. We serve families from all Central Indiana counties and beyond. Since opening in 2002, Sheltering Wings has consistently been at service capacity – sadly not reaching some who need help. Even as we implement our Community Advocacy Services for survivors who don’t need shelter, we see urgent need to increase our capacity to serve more people. Despite our best efforts, the need far outpaces our ability to help.

Everyday, our phones ring with needs we can’t meet through shelter alone. Everyday, someone chooses not to call because they don’t know we’re more than just a shelter. These missed needs hurt our hearts.

Emergency shelter is a huge part of what we do and always will be. While we know the hard truth is we can never serve every victim of abuse, we CAN serve more people if we expand even further beyond emergency shelter and invest in our infrastructure. With our community’s help, we can reach as many survivors as possible.

Ashley spent years bouncing from one abusive relationship to another. “I never knew there were more types of abuse than physical. I never had the words for what was happening to me,” Ashley says. “I’ve been abused in more ways than just being hit for my entire life. My confidence and self-esteem were so low. I was made to feel like I was never smart enough or pretty enough. I’d been controlled and manipulated.” At her hardest points, she was beaten, suffering numerous bruises and even broken ribs. But, when she tried to leave, she had no support or was taken advantage of and forced to go back. “I made up my mind to leave for good when he pushed and threatened my son.” Ashley and her son came to Sheltering Wings.
Ashley’s journey is still in progress. It’s been long and winding but she’s working so hard, and you have been with her for every step as she’s:
  • Built a budget during a volunteer-led finance class
  • Found childcare for her son so she could work
  • Learned healthy ways to deal with stress through art
  • Moved into and maintained the rent for her own apartment!
  • Developed healthy behaviors and gained strength in
    support group
  • Received food, medicine and a donated car after she was rear-ended
    on her way to work

“I’m independent because of Sheltering Wings,” Ashley says. “It can only go up from here!” You can continue to help Ashley and others break the cycle of abuse. But it’s bigger than that. Survivor’s children—and grandchildren—will have a shot at a healthy future because of you and your donations. “Nobody has ever believed in me like this,” Ashley says. “It’s made me believe in myself. I now have the tools I need to succeed, and the confidence to do it. I will never be in an abusive situation again.”
