We all feel the pressure to do more, visit more places, buy the latest and greatest, and improve. This is the nature of modern life as we compare our situations to others as they present themselves via social media. The idea that we’re in the wrong place or that there is something better out there that we are missing haunts us.

That feeling manifests itself in anxiety, guilt, envy, and insecurity – essentially the opposite of happiness. It strips us of the ability to be present and in the moment, engaged with our families and friends rather than having our faces in our phones or our minds saddled with burdens that are not pressing.

Our restlessness is preventing us from enjoying the gift and beauty of the moment at hand. By not giving it our full attention, we are depriving ourselves and our loved ones of the most precious part of our existence and what they will truly miss when we are gone – our time and attention.

The cure is to stop. Give your full attention to the moment, if it is making or enjoying a meal, being stopped in traffic, or sharing a conversation. It’s where you are supposed to be – where your feet are – that truly matters. As men, our greatest gift is our time and attention. Our greatest challenge is giving that gift fully and without restriction or distraction.

The Dalai Lama said, “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow”. Be there and be present. Love the ones you’re with and give that most precious gift.
