October is National Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

Americans have used a lot of slogans over the years to prevent certain undesirable behaviors. “Be Smart, Don’t Start” for smoking, “Say No to Drugs”, “Take a Bite Out of Crime”. But can you think of a long standing national slogan, that has address domestic violence prevention?

I can’t.

But even without a slogan, we can prevent domestic violence by finding ways to help stop it from ever happening, or from happening a second time.

Every October, Sheltering Wings observes National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. This month, and truly every month, we want to increase awareness that domestic abuse exists, and we can help. But also that together, you and I, we can prevent it.

Those of us who work in domestic violence have seen that when we intervene only after the abuse has occurred, we’re just putting a Band-Aid over the problem. We’re helping one individual, and as important as that is, if our efforts stop there we’re neglecting to safeguard others from needing the same kind of help.

By focusing on prevention, we can be more intentional as a community with protecting people from mental and physical harm.

That’s why this October, as Sheltering Wings observes the National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, we invite you to join us in learning about prevention. We’re gathering different groups together throughout October to honor survivors and start conversations about what each of us can do to prevent domestic abuse. Our Teen Council is exploring ways to prevent dating violence, and our Men IN Action Breakfast gathers men who volunteer as role models in our community. This month, they’ll talk about the incredible power of being a positive mentor.

And we have other ways you can be a part of our efforts, including eating out on October 28, at Cunningham Restaurant Group restaurants in Hendricks County to support our mission.

Check out more information about these and other events at shelteringwings.org/dvap. Together, we can prevent domestic violence.

Please join us in that conversation.
