Diversity and Inclusion Policy

Diversity and Inclusion Mission

Sheltering Wings believes in fairness and equality, and recognizes the value of inclusiveness by encouraging the full participation of all individuals in fulfilling its mission of providing a safe place of refuge and hope to anyone fleeing domestic violence. Sheltering Wings recognizes the strength of diversity, which acknowledges a society of different individuals and cultures whose knowledge, skills and talents enrich and strengthen us as a community. Sheltering Wings believes in and practices equal opportunity in all aspects of the organization from community engagement to employment, volunteer management, board participants, client services, and all other aspects of decision-making.

Diversity/Non-Discrimination Definition

Diversity is a term to describe the sum of characteristics that contribute to each person’s identity and individuality. These include, but are not limited to, characteristics based upon which people in the United States have historically been discriminated, such as: culture, religion, ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity, national origin, political affiliation, disability, educational background, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, family status, or age.

Residential and Outreach Programs

All programs and services of Sheltering Wings will adhere to this policy in providing service to clients and the community at-large. No person shall be subject to discrimination on the grounds of culture, religion, ethnicity, race, sex, gender identity, national origin, political affiliation, disability, educational background, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, family status, or age.

Sheltering Wings was formed in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ. Christ was never coercive or offensive and neither are the services provided by the Shelter. Religion is an individual choice and our assistance will be provided to any victim or any background, religious affiliation, or lack thereof. Personnel, volunteers and clients will not prohibit an individual’s religious practice unless it interferes with the rights of others. Participation in religious activities will not be a condition of receiving services or participating in agency sponsored activities.
