Sheltering Wings is Committed to Providing Fair and Livable Wages

DANVILLE, Ind. (9/2/21) – At Sheltering Wings, we make sure survivors of domestic violence have a safe place to stay. Thanks to generous supporters, we provide the basic necessities they need to be comfortable so residents can focus on building stable, independent lives.

That takes a lot of hard work and dedication from our staff. So, our board of directors recently looked at our staff through a similar lens. Were they earning enough to sustain stable, independent lives?

Our leadership team and board are committed to providing fair and livable wages. Sheltering Wings adjusted staff salaries a few years ago to set us on a path toward more appropriate wages. Now, our board has decided once again to increase salaries that don’t fall within reported livable wages in Hendricks County and competitive wages for each position.

This is not to brag; in fact, we recognize this is still a work in progress for us. Instead, as many are experiencing difficulty in hiring, it’s to suggest that we as a society should focus on why it’s been so difficult to find applicants.

As employers, let’s figure out how to provide a truly livable wage. Let’s create work environments where people are treated with respect so they want to be there. Let’s show employees how much we appreciate them.

We help survivors gain the tools they need to be self-sufficient. We should then lead the way in helping our staff find stronger economic stability. We encourage other businesses in Hendricks and the surrounding counties to join us.
