Missing Christmas? Shop for survivors of domestic violence at Sheltering Wings

DANVILLE, Ind. (7/22/21) – Imagine fleeing your home with only what you can quickly throw into a trash bag. That’s how Alicia S. and many others arrive at Sheltering Wings, a provider of emergency housing and resources for survivors of domestic violence. And that’s why the center celebrates Christmas in July each year – and asks the community to contribute to its Wish List.

“Alicia had left her abuser and was living in her car,” said Executive Director Cassie Mecklenburg. “She’d lost everything, including custody of her children, and was jumping from one abusive relationship to another. She came to Sheltering Wings with nothing.”

Now, Alicia has her children back, lives independently and is engaged to be married.

“The Wish List is for basic necessities that we all need to live comfortably: sheets, shower curtains, cleaning supplies, shaving cream,” Mecklenburg said. “Once residents don’t have to worry about having a toothbrush, they can focus on finding a job, getting an education and building a new, independent life.”

Mecklenburg encourages people to gather in groups to collect items. The Wish List is available at shelteringwings.org/ChristmasinJuly. For those who prefer online shopping, the list is also on Amazon.

Christmas in July is presented by Pools of Fun.
