The outpouring of support during the holidays takes us all the way to summer which is why we have Christmas in July. These donations are a lifeline for survivors.

Christmas is my second-favorite holiday (Easter is my first!). I love the festivities that lead up to the day, the decorations that adorn homes and offices, the family and friend gatherings, and the presents! So, when a colleague made the suggestion a few years back that Sheltering Wings celebrate Christmas in July, I immediately said YES.
During the year-end holiday season, we receive such a generous response to our Christmas Wish List. Donations help us provide daily toiletries, bedding, towels, toilet paper, paper towels and all those necessities our families need. By mid-year, however, we begin to run low of these supplies.
So, we thought, why not recreate the holiday festivities in mid-summer and share the fun with our community to stock up on supplies our families will need until Christmas?
We’ve learned a lot since then, and seen even more generosity.
At first, we had the great idea to invite Santa in his warm-weather Hawaiian gear for the kids. We didn’t anticipate how confused they’d be to see Santa Claus in July! We saw real tears as their precious minds tried to reconcile the idea. Christmas cookies couldn’t even comfort them.
We don’t invite Santa anymore, but we still make the day special for everyone – thanks to all the people in our community who give so selflessly.
