“Living loudly. Loving radically. Laughing uncontrollably.”

This mantra for living from Kristin and Danny, an astounding couple we’ve come to know and love, reveals how they set their family’s priorities. Their passion for relationships and finding the fun in life, combined with commitment to their faith, is why we sought them out to be our featured entertainers for the 2021 Sheltering Wings Premier Event.

We’re calling the evening Walk in Their Shoes because we want you to think about what it’s like to walk in the shoes of an abuse survivor … and how you can walk in the shoes of an abuse preventer.

There’s nothing fun about domestic abuse, of course. In fact, how some of our survivors become the generous, loving people they do is almost unfathomable. Their experiences of abuse are heartbreaking.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

We work to help people who have been abused create new, life-giving stories. We also work to prevent abuse from happening in the first place.

A few examples: This summer, a local company will partner with us to educate and train its employees on how to help co-workers who are experiencing abuse.

We’re building on the mobile advocacy program we’ve been using during the pandemic to ensure families who need our services can get them even when they can’t or won’t come through our door.

And we’re always focused on breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Right now, a woman is taking our budgeting class and attending our Embracing Empowerment support group to build the emotional strength and economic freedom she needs to avoid abuse in the future. Another is a mom trying to regain full custody of her children so they, too, can restart a life free of abuse. Another woman is striving to settle her immigration status so she can work full time and save enough money to buy her very own home.

On June 11, you’ll hear success stories, gain perspective and laugh along with Kristin and Danny at our annual Premier Event. As you do so, we count on you to help us build brighter, safer and more laughter-filled futures for our families. God bless, and thank you.
