It’s amazing to think we are in the final month of what has been a tumultuous 2020.  This year has challenged many of us mentally, physically, financially, emotionally, and spiritually.  But, yet, here we are just having celebrated Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Advent season and the year that has seemed like a twelve-month prize fight is not throwing the towel in any time soon!

So, what do we do, men?
Let’s lean into the opportunity to slow down and let’s take advantage of the gift isolation has given us with our families.  And, by take advantage, I mean let’s reflect on our role as father.

In Matthew 3:17, as Jesus comes up out of the waters of baptism, we hear the voice of our Heavenly Father admonish his son saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”  WHOM I LOVE.

One of the greatest gifts I have received as a son is the decision my father made to break down the walls of perceived masculinity that prevented him from having a REAL relationship with his father.  In doing so, he not only broke a generational cycle of emotional bankruptcy, he gave himself the gift of intimacy with a man he loved.  Further, it freed him up to extend the gift to his three sons, and we in turn have extended it to our sons (and daughters, let’s not forget our daughters).

So, men, as we continue to lead our families through unprecedented times, let’s make sure we let our Heavenly Father lead us into the actions and decisions we make as earthy fathers.  Tell your boys you love them and tell them you’re proud of them.  Let this season of Advent be the beginning of a beautiful gift; a gift of love.
