As I write this, new cases of COVID-19 are on the rise and expected to worsen during the winter months. For some, this may mean we won’t be spending Thanksgiving with family for the first time in our lives. For people trapped in domestic abuse, the additional isolation means this could be the most dangerous Thanksgiving they’ve ever known. On top of all this will be the outcome of the presidential election … an event that could deepen the divisiveness threatening our friendships, families and country.

Difficult questions can torment me and get me down if I let them.

  • How long will we have to endure this fear and loneliness?
  • How many more lives will we lose to this virus?
  • Why must those who already endure abuse be made even more vulnerable?

On such days, I turn to the Bible, the best source of comfort and perspective I know. “Come unto me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest,” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).

Then, I take a walk through our shelter.

Our residents – trapped in abusive homes not so long ago – attend classes to learn how to keep a budget. They’re playing with their children without fear of annoying the person in the other room. They’re sitting around the kitchen table talking with friends they’ve made here – friendships they form because no one has the power to prevent them now.

Many are still rebuilding their self-esteem and self-reliance. Some get frustrated at times. Yet, all give thanks for today … every day. Each one has hope and gratitude in their hearts.

This Thanksgiving, I will take these men and women as my role models and give thanks for every day of my life. And, to continually adjust my heart and mind in the midst of what’s happening in the world around us, I will do as Matthew 11:29 says: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls.”

I’m praying God’s peace and grace will be closer to you – closer to us all – than ever before during the upcoming holiday season.

With gratitude,

Cassie Mecklenburg
Executive Director
