It is not always physical….

By March 7, 2010 No Comments

Oftentimes when the topic of domestic violence is brought up there are many misconceptions. One misconception is that domestic violence is always about physical abuse. It is not always about someone being physically abused. About half of the residents at Sheltering Wings come to us not because they have been physically beaten, but because of the verbal and emotional abuse, and the controlling behavior of their partner.

It is important to remember this when someone comes to you as a victim asking for help. You need to respond with understanding and resources. As a community we must be prepared to help when the occasion presents itself. Be informed, learn about your community and the resources that are available.

As a victim just because you are not being physically beaten, does not mean you are not a victim of domestic violence. Our residents have often said, “the scars will heal, it’s the words I can’t get out of my head.” Please do not minimize – get help.
