Sheltering Wings Honored by White House

Danville, IN – July 7, 2008 – Sheltering Wings was honored by the White House Faith-Based and Community Initiatives during their Innovations in Effective Compassion Conference held on June 26 and June 27 in Washington, D.C. The two-day conference was a national event which included many of the Nation’s top researchers, Federal and state officials, social entrepreneurs, and other experts and innovators in the field.

Sheltering Wings houses women and their dependent children who suffer from domestic violence, and is located in Hendricks County. In May of 2008 the shelter had an opportunity to enter its children’s video in the Portraits of Compassion video contest, sponsored by the Health and Human Services division of the White House Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. The video was produced by Zach Rosing Productions located in Zionsville, Indiana. It was selected in the top four Honorable Mentions received throughout the United States and was premiered during the conference. Speakers included the President of the United States George W. Bush, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Steve Preston, as well as many other national and state dignitaries. Representing Sheltering Wings was the Director of Marketing & Business Development, Mary Williams.

The application process for entering the shelter video, titled The Need for Change is Now, included a description of the Sheltering Wings organization and its mission, the partnership between the organization and the government which is comprised of funding at both the local and federal levels, as well as a description of the video and the video story itself. The Need for Change is Now can be viewed on the government web site at http://innovationincompassion.hhs.gov/changing_lives/videos.html.

The mission of the Faith-Based and Community Initiative is to strengthen both faith-based and other community-based organizations and grow government’s collaboration with them to aid people in need. Over the past seven years, tens of thousands of partnerships have formed between government and dedicated nonprofits, extending service and hope to millions of needy individuals both at home and abroad.
