Intro to Sheltering Wings

Brief overview of Sheltering Wings’ services and programs including residential, non-residential, education and prevention services/programs. Typically paired with other trainings or as stand-alone informational presentation.

Understanding Domestic Violence

Foundational overview: definitions, statistics, types and signs of abuse, power-and-control model, reasons victims stay, effects on children, characteristics of healthy relationships and more.

Breaking the Generational Cycle of Abuse

Impact of Domestic Violence on Children

Learn the signs of abuse as it affects children, its short- and long-term effects, the role of childhood trauma in abuse and the hope offered by building resilience in our children.

Combating ACEs with Assets

How ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) affect children throughout their lives. Discussion of resilience, the groundbreaking Kaiser-Permanente ACE Study and how to equip young people with the assets they need to thrive.

Trauma-Informed Care and Response

This course will define trauma and trauma-informed care, review scope of trauma-informed services, study trauma reactions and learn the trauma-informed and -responsive approach.

Understanding Elder Abuse and Later-inLife Abuse

Learn about the intersection of elder abuse and abuse later in life, types and signs of abuse in 60+ community, and how caregivers, professionals and community can help to prevent elder abuse and neglect.

Healthy Relationships and Boundaries

Identify characteristics of healthy relationships, how to define and set boundaries, the types of boundaries that keep relationships healthy and why they protect both people in the relationship. Length: 60 mins.

Components of primary prevention and the prevention continuum, social norms, risk factors, the social ecological model, prevention at the community level, and your role in all of it.

Domestic Violence and the Workplace

Designed for HR professionals, supervisors, management.

Mitigating the impact of domestic violence on the workplace through liability, lost wages, lower job performance, increased insurance/workers’ compensation claims and more. Advice on policy development and helping survivors and those around them.

All-Staff Training

Create a safe work environment by educating all employees about signs of domestic abuse, what to say and how to help. Available virtually, as a lunch and learn, an all-staff meeting or whatever best suits your organization.

Church Trainings

Designed specifically for churches and faith-based organizations, which are shepherds of the community and a cornerstone of the Sheltering Wings mission.

Church and Faith-Based Leadership

Designed for professional and lay leaders.

How to best respond when a congregant is or may be experiencing abuse. This training will examine the role of the church in primary prevention, intervention, danger assessment and safety planning. Study best practices and the need for policy.

Church and Faith-Based Volunteer Training

Understanding of the signs and types of abuse and how to respond as a faith-based volunteer, often the first person to learn of the abuse of a congregant.

Customizable Ministry Areas

Education and prevention training customized to the many ministries offered by churches and faith-based organizations: youth groups, children’s leaders, care ministries, and others.     Length: Varies by need.

For adults and parents who can influence a young person, and for adults and young people who want to learn how to identify healthy relationships. We can stop abuse before it starts!

Everyone’s an Asset Builder

Increasing the protective factors and reducing the risk factors that contribute to domestic violence through developmental assets: positive research-based life experiences that help young people develop into successful, contributing adults. Rooted in positive youth development, resiliency and the potential to thrive.

How to apply the Search Institute’s 5 elements/20 actions that create powerful adult-child relationships, increasing the likelihood of positive development.

Guiding Your Teen Through the Dating Years

How teens view dating and relationships, how to start conversations about dating, the tools they need to navigate dating safely and ways to respond when their relationships don’t work out or unhealthy behaviors arise.

Length: 60 mins.

Technology and Dating

How significantly technology affects the dating scene, how young people use tech in their relationships, and how to help them set boundaries and balance technology with real-life dating experiences.

Healthy Relationships for Your School

Specifically designed for middle and high school classrooms.

Three consecutive, interactive, in-school days cover healthy relationships, boundaries, conflict resolution, red flags of abuse, how to help a friend and ways to prevent abuse. Option for student led presentations with the help of the Sheltering Wings Youth Council. 

Length: Three 60-min. sessions (one per day)

Keep Connected

Keep Connected is designed to strengthen family engagement, learn keys to positive family relationships and try new ways to stay connected as kids grow up. It is for parents and teens/pre-teens between the ages of 10 to 14. Workshops explore the challenges, strengths and strategies that come with family relationships in the teen years. Equips participants with tools to connect and build trust within their families.

Length: 7 sessions, 2 hours each for seven weeks
