Christmas in July helps survivors of domestic abuse focus on the future

Community will bring Christmas cheer in the summer to Sheltering Wings

DANVILLE, Ind. (6/29/21) – The pantries at Sheltering Wings get fully stocked each Christmas from donations of basic necessities for families fleeing domestic violence. Those stockpiles are nearly depleted by mid-summer, but women, men and children still arrive every day with next to nothing of their own. That’s why Sheltering Wings is celebrating Christmas in July: Give. Gather. Share.

The event includes a dollar-for-dollar matching gift and a Wish List Donation Drive.

“When a survivor of domestic abuse doesn’t have to worry about buying basic things like sheets, cleaning supplies and baby bottles, they can focus on finding a job, getting an education and building a new, independent life,” said Executive Director Cassie Mecklenburg.

Take Areta, a woman who came to the shelter pregnant and with three young children in tow. Sheltering Wings enabled her to focus on earning a college degree and exceling at a job. Today, she earns a salary and has her own office, and her children will go to school with all the school supplies they need.

Community members have three ways to be part of the celebration:

  • During July, every dollar donated to Sheltering Wings will be matched by a group of donors and partners (up to $10,000).
  • Get your work colleagues, family or friends together to shop for the Sheltering Wings Wish List at shelteringwings.org/ChristmasInJuly and on Amazon. The shelter’s residents need towels, pillows, baby bottles, men’s shaving equipment, over-the-counter medicines and more. Then there are cleaning products and office supplies used by staff and residents alike.
  • Spread the word about the shelter’s resources on social media with a special promotional kit available at shelteringwings.org/ChristmasInJuly.

Items can be dropped off on weekdays from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. or call (317) 386-5056 with questions.

Christmas in July is presented by Pools of Fun.
