Hello. My name is Ken Davis, and I am the newly minted Men IN Action Coordinator. My job is to serve as a staff liaison between the Men IN Action Committee and the Prevention Program at Sheltering Wings. I will be working to identify and develop additional opportunities for you to become more involved with Men IN Action. Through the Men IN Action Breakfast and Men IN Action Read, we are already known in the community, and we are ready to build on that.
I moved to Indiana from Montana. Why did I do that? Because a significant part of our family lives here in the Midwest. That’s it. Plain and simple. My background is in local government, emergency services, and broadcasting, to name a few. When you live this long in a small town you get to do lots of things!
I participated in Men IN Action Read this year, then became more aware of Sheltering Wings and the Men IN Action program through the website. Ultimately, I felt drawn to continue to make a difference.
Even in rural Montana, abuse occurs. Unfortunately, it is not all tall peaks, breathtaking scenery and blue-ribbon trout streams.
The real reason that keeps pushing me to get involved is the story of 12-year-old Alex. One of the many hats I wore in Montana was that of a Coroner. Alex was the victim of abuse. He lived in a home with his grandparents and three cousins. Alex was abused by almost everyone in the home. Members of the household would inflict a variety of abuse on him, and Alex tragically died as a result of the abuse.
The signs of abuse were present, Alex’s story is one that could have been prevented.
This is the kind of thing we, as Men IN Action, can prevent by being a presence in our communities, by being a role model, and being someone who cares about youth. We are going to be working on new ways for you to get involved with the prevention programs at Sheltering Wings to give young people and families a strong foundation that can prevent abuse in all age groups. Proverbs 22:6 says: “Start your children off on the way they should go and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” I hope that in the coming months you will take advantage of new opportunities to be a Man IN Action in our community. Stay tuned.
