Christmas in July
The outpouring of support during the holidays takes us all the way to summer which is why we have Christmas in July. These donations are a lifeline for survivors.
You can GIVE, GATHER or SHARE (or all three!).
Can I share a touching bit of feedback we receive from our families? They want so badly to be a part of the community.
They would love to become more involved in a church, bring their kids to community events, meet the leaders of the city they call home. They want to feel like they belong.
It makes sense. The foundation of all abuse is isolation and control. When someone is isolated, they feel far removed from any sense of neighborhood camaraderie or community support.
On the other hand, when a person escapes isolation and begins to build a sense of safety and self-sufficiency, they also start longing for opportunities to connect with other people they’ve been kept from for so long.
So, this summer, as you’re out on the ball diamond, eating at Rib Fest in Avon or enjoying the International Festival in Plainfield, I encourage you to exude Hoosier Hospitality. We’re all a little unused to it because of COVID, but you can say hello, introduce yourself to someone, invite a new person to join your group. Whether they happen to be one of our clients or not, you’ll be building community unity that benefits us all.
And if you’re looking for a way to support our clients this summer, they’d love to receive tickets to an event, see you host a cookout in our courtyard or experience any of our other many ideas for volunteers. Check out shelteringwings.org/volunteers for more ideas. And say hello!
