Background Check Policy
A national criminal records check will be conducted on each staff member or volunteer prior to employment. Criminal records which include convictions for sex offenses, crimes against persons, child abuse or neglect or other violent crimes will result in elimination from consideration. A total criminal history will be evaluated to determine if there is a pattern of criminal behavior that would detract from the mission of Sheltering Wings.
If the criminal history reveals any non-violent offense dating back one year and/or the person is on probation, consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis.
Any staff or volunteer who fails to pass the background check and/or has been convicted of child abuse and/or neglect, or domestic violence will not be employed or permitted to volunteer at Sheltering Wings.
The conviction of a staff member or volunteer for a crime where such conviction adversely affects his or her current job or which adversely affects Sheltering Wings’ ability to carry out its assigned mission will be terminated immediately. This includes, but is not limited to sex offenses, physical violence, stalking, criminal trespass, invasion of privacy and neglect or abuse of a child or protected adult.
