You reap what you sow.
March is a time for planning, for preparing, for putting our aspirations for the year into action.
Even those of us who don’t making a living driving a tractor are thinking about planting during spring. Just as the farmers in our communities prepare for the busy planting season, those of us with vegetable gardens are planning and beginning the early stages of this year’s crop. We put in the work now to reap the rewards of our efforts later in the year.
March is also our annual Men IN Action READ event, where men from our community go to elementary schools throughout the county to read to the students and to provide a positive male interaction for the kids in those classrooms.
In my 12 years as a deputy prosecutor, I’ve seen the devastating effects when men fail to be there for their families. Those failures have widespread ripples that affect not only their immediate families but also the entire community. It’s a sad fact of life that many children lack positive interaction with men. That’s what led me to Men IN Action and its mission to promote positive social behaviors and provide positive male role models.
The READ event is a small ask. It’s one morning. You receive a breakfast and a prayer; you spend less than an hour in a classroom reading a book selected by Sheltering Wings. But this small investment of time and resources pays off in spades.
When you gather at the meeting place with dozens of other men, you recognize the big difference your small investment will make. The smiles on the kids’ faces as you read and talk with them will stick with you long after you’ve left the classroom. That impression will stick with those kids as well.
As it says in Galatians 6:7, a man reaps what he sows. Take this opportunity to sow the seeds of positive change in your community. Spend some time showing children what it means for a man to take time out of his day to serve others. Even if you can’t make it to this year’s READ event, there are countless ways you can get involved. Now is the time. Don’t let this season of opportunity pass by. Join Men IN Action and help us make a difference for the future.
