Dear friends,
She had only lived in America for a few years, and had never seen a football game. But when the Indianapolis Colts graciously gave Sheltering Wings tickets to this season’s Monday Night Football game, she thought she’d give it a try.
We sat together, and I explained the game. “The goal is to get the ball in the end zone.” “That’s what they call a first down.” You get the idea. She pointed to the guy in the middle of the field and asked who he was, and I described the quarterback’s role. The experience was fun for both of us!
During halftime, she shared the story of her journey to Sheltering Wings. When she arrived, all she owned was what she was wearing. “But today, I have everything I need. I have a closet with clothes. A donor provided a Meijer gift card and I was able to go shopping and buy all my toiletries. I was smart with my money! I bought enough shampoo for a whole year! The people here have become my new family.” Not long ago, she took the next step in her journey by moving into transitional housing.
As we left the game, she said, “Miss Cassie, when I get a job and save up enough money, I’m going to come right back here [to a Colts game] and remember this night and be thankful. This is what our community allowed me to experience!”
Every time I watch a football game, I remember her delightful laughter … and her genuine gratitude for everything she had received from the shelter and our supporters. As we join with our families this Thanksgiving, may we be just as thankful for the many blessings God has sent our way.
And among the things I’ll thank Him for are the generous support and loving prayers you and so many others have given the women, the children, and the staff at Sheltering Wings this year. May your holiday season be joyful, healthful, and warm!
In His Service,
Cassie Martin
